Introduction

“Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything."

This proverb should be your only guideline in this new and improved line follower competition. After last year’s success with that twisting and turning path, this year we take the competition up a notch. In fact, we take it up two notches.

Firstly, we introduce a third colour (apart from white and black) in the path to be followed and also introduce a obstacle in the course where a participant can take a risk and take a shortcut or play it safe and take the hard way.

Watch this space for the exciting new track filled with the new challenges and prove that no matter how twisted the line gets, you can follow!

Task:

Participants need to build a line follower robot that can sense and follow a line of 3cm width on a contrasting surface.

Prizes worth INR 5500 to be won.

Gameplay

Round 1:

The bot will have to complete the track covering all check points .

If the bot gets off the track then the bot will have to start from the previous checkpoint.

Bots with best timing will proceed to the next round.

The bots must be calibrated for green (Peppy green) and white track as shown over black background.

RGB code for green (Peppy green) colour used is 200 225 123.

Round 2:

The bots should be capable of following black and white tracks as anyone would be followed.

The bots can have switching mechanism in order to move into others track on detection of obstacle and follow a shorter and simpler path.

In case of switching if collision takes place then the bot which hasn’t switched will be placed at the next check point.

This will ensure that no further collision takes place and since the switched path is shorter it won’t make any big difference to the switching bot.

If the participants don’t wish to switch then their bot will follow the same coloured path which would be longer and difficult.

If the bot gets off the track then the bot will have to start from previous checkpoint.

Depending on which bot finishes first the winner would be decided.

**Exact specification of obstacle will be put up soon.

**The penalty points will be announced on the day of the event only.

The organizers reserve all rights to change any of the above rules as they deem fit. Change in rules, if any will be indicated on the website. In case of any discrepancy decision of the judges shall be treated as final and binding on all.

Rules and Specifications

Rules and Specifications:

  • Only one robot per team is allowed.
  • Maximum number of people per team is 4. Team members can be from different educational institutions.
  • The robots should be within 200mm x 200mm x 200mm.
  • Robots must be autonomous, i.e., no wetware (human) operated remote controls will be permitted.
  • The robots must have an accessible on/off switch.
  • The power supply for the vehicle should be contained on-board, and should not exceed 15V between any two points in the circuit.
  • The sensors must not touch the arena surface or damage it in any way.
  • The bot can calibrate the sensors 5 minutes prior to the starting time.
  • To detect the obstacle, teams are allowed to sense without touching it.
  • The time will be measured from the moment the robot crosses the starting line till it crosses the finish line. A robot is deemed to have crossed the finish line when the foremost wheel, track, or leg of the robot contacts or crosses over the line. A maximum of 6 minutes is allowed to complete the course; else this will lead to disqualification. Time shall be measured by an electronic gate system or by a judge with a stopwatch, based on the availability of equipment. In either case the recorded time shall be final.
  • A robot that wanders off of the arena surface will be disqualified. A robot shall be deemed to have left the arena when any wheel, leg, or track has moved completely off the arena surface.
  • If the robot loses the course line, then it has to re-acquire the line from the previous traversed checkpoint. If the robot fails to do so, it will be given one chance to re-attempt. The robot must start the course again from the previous checkpoint, and if it loses the line course on its third attempt, it will be disqualified.
  • The checkpoints on the track will be disclosed at the time of event.
  • The decisions of all officials regarding these rules and the conduct of the event shall be final.
  • Any damage to the arena whatsoever will lead to immediate disqualification.

Hand Touches:

  • If an operator touches the machine during run, this will be considered as a hand-touch and the machine must be put back at the last checkpoint crossed. If the machine already crossed the finish line, it may be removed at any time.
  • The operator can take any number of hand touches. There is penalty for a hand-touch.
  • Also the machine must be placed back at the last checkpoint crossed after every hand touch.
  • Even if a participant takes a hand touch, the clock will keep running and will not be reset as the machine starts again from the previous checkpoint.
